Yay For School! Back To School Giveaway!
School days are upon us once again! As for me, I cannot stand taking my girls back to school shopping for clothes, but actually like buying supplies. Pens, crayons, folders, planners... it's always fun to see the cute new designs every year. However, I did feel like I spent way more on school supplies this year than I have in previous years. My wallet definitely took a hit with all that we had to buy this year. I'm sure it's not just me that's noticed a cost increase, but since I haven't hosted a giveaway on here for a minute, I thought I'd do something for my readers and host a Back-To-School giveaway, where one lucky person is going to win a $25 Amazon gift card to help with their BTS needs.
The giveaway is open to all, and will run through 9/2/19. I will send an Amazon.com gift card through email, and while this giveaway is open to all, it is the entrant's responsibility to make sure Amazon is available where they reside as no prize substitutions will be made. The winner will have 24 hours to respond to winning email before a new one is chosen. As some participants aren't on all social media platforms, I offer multiple ways to enter, but remember, each one is optional. Enter only the ones you'd like an entry for. Good luck!

Healthy After-School Banana Snack

School days are upon us once more, and I'm just going to admit that I am READY to send the kids back. It's been one long summer and this mama is tired! I know that a lot of your kids went back this week, but next Thursday is our official BTS day. I will miss our carefree summer days, but I think even the girls are ready to get back into more structured days. It's time to get those brains working again, so by the time they get home they need a healthy pick-me-up snack to recharge their batteries. That's where this Healthy After-School Snack idea from Golden Blossom Honey comes into play.
This banana snack is one that most kids can toss together themselves, and is packed with lots of nutrition for refueling, making it the most perfect after-school snack for growing bodies and minds. I also want to point out that if you follow the SCD diet, all of the ingredients here are SCD legal, so not only is it good for kids, it's a great snack for those with tummy issues, like me.
1 teaspoon nuts, chopped
1 teaspoon raisins or any dried fruit

Back To School Energy Bars
*Disclosure- I received the mentioned product courtesy

Can you believe that it's already almost time for back to school? We're just 3 weeks away until my girls go back and I am not ready. Where did the summer go!? Now that all of the summer stuff has been clearanced out to make room for the notebooks and glue, I need to dig in and get myself mentally prepared for the new school year. Mariah will be back at Purdue for her sophomore year and Allison is moving up to high school. Yikes! Not only is summer flying by, but so are my kid's childhoods. *sob* While they may be growing quicker than I'd like, they are never too old for homemade goodies. One thing that my kids love grabbing on their way out the door in the mornings are homemade granola bars. I found this Energy Bar recipe on Golden Blossom Honey earlier this summer and after looking through the ingredients, knew it was one that needed to be added to our school breakfast/snacking recipe catalogue.
Allison isn't a morning person, so these will be perfect for those days she just wants a grab and go kind of breakfast. It's packed with energy boosting ingredients that will help her power through until lunch. The recipe calls for harvest medley, so I bought a bag of mixed seeds and fruits containing pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, raisins, and goji berries to give it an extra boost of nutritional goodness. You can find something similar where your grocer keeps their dried fruits.
1/3 cup GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
4 cups raisin bran cereal
3/4 cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup harvest medley chopped dried fruit, (found in supermarket with dried fruits)

Back To School Peanut Butter Spread
Disclosure- I received the mentioned product courtesy

I think there are few things that my family loves more than peanut butter. If a peanut butter recipe pops up on Facebook, there's about a 100% chance someone is going to tag me in that post. To say we are peanut butter connoisseurs would be an understatement. With school back in session, I didn't want Allison to get bored with regular peanut butter sandwiches in her lunch box each week, so I thought I'd try Golden Blossom Honey's spin on a tasty Peanut Butter Spread recipe I saw on their website recently.
I'll be honest here and say that I usually turn peanut butter into something a lot less healthy. Cream cheese, vanilla, sugar, whip cream are all such yummy mix ins, but this recipe is just the opposite. Nothing but carrots, yogurt, vanilla and raw honey are mixed into the peanut butter, making it not only a delicious spread, but a healthy one too! I was a little concerned that it was going to taste "too healthy", but if you've ever had a peanut butter mousse before, it's really quite comparable. It tastes so much like a dessert spread instead of a nutritious snack. Spread it on bread, crackers, pretzels, grahams and fruit. It's all good! If you make this, do it in small batches because I think it tastes best fresh. I did refrigerate my left over spread and it didn't have the same "pow" factor as a freshly whipped up batch, but thankfully this can be made in under 2 minutes, so making it fresh whenever the cravings hit shouldn't be an issue.

How Mamma Chia Fuels Us For Back-To-School
Disclosure- I received the mentioned product courtesy
of the sponsor for the purpose of this review. All opinions are genuine, based on my experience with the product, and
have not been influenced by promotional
items.
Well, the day is just about upon us. Today marks the last day of summer vacation and Allison is less than thrilled that tomorrow she'll be walking into the school as an official 8th grader. I admit, it would be nice if we could stretch the summer out a wee bit longer, but then again, I am looking forward to the normalcy that the school year routine brings. This year won't be so hectic for me since I'm down to having to corral only one kid in the morning, but I am still going to have to make sure I'm awake enough to pack her a nutritious lunch for school. I don't know about you guys, but even with the menu changes in recent years, school lunches here are atrocious so I make sure Allison has good food to fuel her body and brain so she can finish the school day on a high note.
In recent years, I've become a huge fan of chia seeds. I sprinkle them in our smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt and puddings. Not only do I like the texture they add to my recipes, I love the health benefits you get from them too. Chia seeds are the richest plant-based source of Omega-3s and are a great source of dietary fiber and complete protein. That's why I am looking to Mamma Chia® this school year to help us power through our day.
Mamma Chia® is a revolutionary in the beverage industry, launching the first-to-market chia beverage in 2009. Since then, they have developed an array of innovative products to spread the magic of chia.
I relate to the founder & CEO of Mamma Chia®, Janie Hoffman quite well. Janie suffers from an autoimmune disorder, like myself, and turned to incorporating chia into her wholesome, organic diet and was soon noticing she had more vitality, energy and strength, and was becoming symptom-free of her autoimmune disorder. Enthused for the nourishing power of chia, she headed for her kitchen to whip up tasty treats and beverages for family and friends, and anyone with the desire to change their body for the better.
Mamma Chia® is USDA Certified Organic, Gluten-Free, Vegan, Kosher, and Non-GMO, so I am excited to be including Mamma Chia® snacks and beverages in Allison's lunch box for a healthy treat. And, I love that 1% of sales support healthy, local food systems!
I'm huge on the various chia beverages, but Allison is really digging the Chia Squeeze Pouches and the Chia Vitality Wild Blueberry Clusters Granola.
While she does love to eat the granola straight from the package, I did whip us up some easy-to-make Blueberry Fool layered with the Wild Blueberry Clusters that will also make for a delicious after school snack.
Since chia is loaded with brain-friendly Omega-3s, fat and fiber to fill bellies, and protein for growing bodies, you can see why we are choosing Mamma Chia® for our back-to-school lunch and snacking needs. Not only is it great for kids, but moms like me enjoy it because it gives us the energy we need from the time the morning alarm rings until we're crawling back into bed after a long day.
Mamma Chia® can be found in most health food stores and mainstream grocers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Mamma Chia® can also be purchased online at www.ShopMammaChia.com

One lucky Theresa's Mixed Nuts reader is going to win a prize package of Mamma Chia® products. The giveaway is open to residents of the U.S. and ends 8/30. The winner will have 24 hours to respond to winning email before a new winner is selected. Please enter on the giveaway widget below.

Honey Hives for After School Snacking

It's hard to believe that in less than 2 weeks my girls will be back in school. I'm sitting over here trying to figure out where the summer went since it seemed to have flown by in the blink of an eye. This weekend I'll be running to Costco to stock up on lunch box items and after school snacks, and since Mariah will be off to college, the mom in me worries that she won't be eating enough, so I'll be loading up on dorm room snacks as well. While my girls do love a prepackaged treat every now and again, they also appreciate when I take the time to make them something homemade. Protein bites are a favorite, and Rice Krispies Treats are a close second, so I knew that these Honey Hives from Golden Blossom Honey were going to be a recurring homemade treat for them this year.
They've got the protein packed in from peanut butter and a crispy crunch from the crispy rice cereal, which is an incredibly good combination. This is a tasty treat that Allison will gobble up after school or in her lunch bag. Since Mariah is only 3 hours away, I can pack them in an air-tight container and she can enjoy them the day after they are made providing there's no delay in the postal service once they are shipped. These are served at room temperature, but I actually like to eat them cold out of the refrigerator. Makes me feel like I am getting an extra special frosty treat that way.

Yummy Back To School Sandwich

I think most of our kids have went back to school by now, no? We're about a month in and already I am scrambling to find delicious lunch options for the girls. Mariah despises school lunch and hasn't bought one in over 5 years. I don't blame her. I've gone to lunch with them a few times and it really leaves a lot to be desired! Since she wants a packed lunch every day, I have to really get creative so she doesn't get bored with what I put in her lunch sack. I saw this Yummy Back To School Sandwich on Golden Blossom Honey and it definitely struck me as something different.
I admit, I raised my eyebrows at this concoction. A peanut butter and bacon sandwich? But, I love peanut butter and bacon makes everything taste better, so why not? It was assembled in no time, and we got down to business and dug right in. And.... it was love at first bite! It's got a perfect blend of sweet and salty, and the crispy bacon gives an extra oomph to the overall texture of the sandwich.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY
2 tablespoons peanut butter
2 strips crisp cooked bacon, crumbled

Peanut Butter Dip For After School Snacking
*Disclosure- I received the mentioned product courtesy

Like most kids, my girls are hungry when they walk in the door from school. Bags get discarded on the floor and they are high-tailing it into the kitchen looking for something to eat. It's important for us to have something filling and healthy on hand for after school snacking. While they do like fruits and veggies, it's always a treat to add a dip into the mix. My family loves peanut butter, and since it pairs well with fruit, veggies and pretzels, I think we will be keeping this Peanut Butter Dip from Golden Blossom Honey on hand for delicious and healthy after school snacking.
The recipe didn't call for it, but I added in some chocolate chips for a little special treat. It's a small indulgence that my kids enjoy.

Walmart Back To School! Getting BTS Essentials Like A Boss #BTSLikeABoss
The first half of our summer started out lazy and slow. The second half? Not so much. We are trying to pack in a family vacation, a drivers test, last minute doctor and dental appointments, and Mariah just informed me she has changes that need to be made to her class schedule before heading back to school in a few weeks. We have A LOT going on these next few weeks and we still need to do most of our back-to-school shopping. Trying to squeeze everything in can get a little overwhelming, but thankfully busy moms like me know that I can get everything I need in one stop for back to school at Walmart.
Pens, pencils, paper and crayons. Rulers, markers, folders and binders. Each year the list of back to school essentials grows and grows. Times that by 2 kids, I have a lot to buy. In addition to the reading, writing and arithmetic utensils, the teachers usually request paper products to be sent in as well. Paper towels, toilet paper and facial tissue are usually in high demand. Saving money on our back-to-school purchases is equally important as saving time, so I am thankful that I can grab the teacher requested paper essentials, like Kleenex at Walmart while I am making the rest of my back-to-school purchases.
I love being able to get all of our back-to-school supplies in one stop while saving money, too! This year I am really excited to see select products are offering Bonus Boxtops For Education on the product packing!
Not only am I able to fulfill the school paper essentials, I am also helping the school earn some much needed money with those extra Boxtops! Grab Kleenex, Scott Extra Soft and Viva at Walmart, and be sure to look for the back-to-school packing with the bonus Boxtops to help your school today!
Once you've completed your Walmart Back To School shopping, be sure to share how you did your shopping like a boss with the #BTSLikeABoss hashtag on your social media channels!
What's on your back-to-school essential list this year?

Back To School Fashion For Teen Girls #ohsofamous
For us, it's exactly 1 month until my girls go back to school. 1 month! Where did the summer go!? Normally I'll put off back-to-school shopping for as long as possible, but we actually got a jump start on bts shopping already this year. I found going a little early in the season nets us the best selections, and I was intrigued watching my girls dig through the clothing racks for what's on trend in the schools right now. Allison has gotten quite picky with fashion this year. I guess middle school is about the time that sets in, right?
For middle school girls, it's all about the skinny jeans. No flare, no crazy pocket designs. Just simple, basic skinny jeans. Graphic tee shirts are also trending right now. The sillier the picture or saying on the front, all the better! Fun designs on shoes are a hit as well. Allison picked out these Vans Atwood Low Sneaker to complete her bts outfits. The cosmic design has just the right touch of whimsy to head back-to-school in style this year.
Mariah is going to be a junior, and I noticed she is starting to get into more grown-up looking styles. She still loves a fun graphic tee every now and again, but what seems to be trending with high school girls are skinny jeans or jeggings, offset with over sized tee shirts or sweaters. The high school is pretty big, and when you have to rush to 6 different classes a day, comfy shoes are a must! Mariah selected Nike Flex Trainer 5 Running Shoe to help get her to class comfortably and quickly.
All kids want to go back to school in style, and that's why we love Famous Footwear! They always have the latest shoe trends that the kids are wanting for back to school! 2014 Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program Helps Children with Needed School Supplies
*Disclosure- I received a sample product to help facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.
Starting the school year can be an exciting time for most students. It's a time for new beginnings, making new friends, and learning new things. But it can also be a challenging time for families when money is tight. Even though we live in a great nation that offers free education, there are still expenses associated with sending our children to school. They need so many supplies - backpacks, paper, pens, rulers, folders... Those expenses can really start to add up, and some families simply can not afford to send their children to school with those much needed supplies. Children should be worrying about getting good grades, and not worrying about if they are going to have the tools necessary to achieve those grades. The Office Depot Foundation is doing their part to make sure many children are going to start the year off on the right foot by sending them to school with the necessary supplies needed to have a successful school year.
In 2014, The Foundation is donating 350,000 sackpacks throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as many other countries. The sackpacks come in 7 different colors, and are specially designed with fun new patterns for 2014. Each sackpack contains a pen, pencil, 4 crayons, pencil sharpener, eraser, 6 inch rule, and a zippered pencil pouch.
There are NO Office Depot or Office Depot Foundation logos or markings on the bags, with the exception of the removable paper tag. They want children to feel proud to carry the sackpacks, without the risk of being stigmatized by something that could be identified as an act of charity. My girls thought the designs were trendy and stylish, and a whole lot of fun!
The Office Depot Foundation has given away more than 3 million sackpacks since its inception 14 years ago. This year they will be giving away another 350,000 sackpacks to those in need.
Here is a short 2 minute video on the program. It's beautiful to see how happy the children are to receive their sackpacks!

Wordless Wednesday ~ Middle School
*Sniff, Sniff* Crummy photo, but I had to capture Allison's first day as a middle school student. My baby is no longer a baby anymore :(
*On another note, Mariah is thrilled. High School is without power today, so she gets an extra day of summer vacation! Yay!
Is summer break officially over where you live?

*Disclosure- I received a
product courtesy of the sponsor for the purpose of this review. No monetary
compensation was provided. All opinions are genuine, based on my experience with
the product, and have not been influenced by promotional items.
Today is the day the kids have been dreading all summer. It’s officially
the start of a new school year. Even though my kids don’t look forward to
heading back to class, the one thing that does excite them is shopping for
school supplies. Allison couldn’t wait to get her supply list printed off, then
immediately started pestering me to take her shopping for what she needed.
Staples has always been one of our favorite destinations to get what we need to
stuff the backpacks full without spending a fortune.
This year we were excited to learn about the new, exclusive back-to-school collections that Staples now carries in their stores. New product lines from
Teen Vogue and Nickelodeon patterns are not only fun and fashionable, but they
make it easy for students to show off their favorite characters and styles while
being functional at the same time!
Nickelodeon patterns, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spongebob, are displayed on Staples BETTER® binders, pencil pouches, die-cut erasers, notebooks, folders and clipboards.
The Teen Vogue Collection, a Staples exclusive, has designer items inspired straight from the runway. Electric Jungle, Punk Prodigy, Rive Gauch and Festive Floral prints are featured across an array of school supplies including notebooks, pens, erasers, folders, pencil cases, and Staples Better® binders. Seriously, how CUTE are the Teen Vogue lipstick erasers pictured below!?
Staples certainly has an amazing selection to chose from when shopping for your back-to-school necessities. Not only do they offer Teen Vogue and Nickelodeon, they have added more trendy items to get your student excited about the upcoming school year, and there is truly something for everyone. Their must-have products for 2014 include products for the tech savvy, thrill seekers, animal lovers, organized students, and the girly girls who loves glitter and shimmer. And the best part is, the products are all affordable!
Staples is committed to saving their customers money on all their back-to-school needs with their Make More Happen for Less campaign. Offering a 110% Price Match Guarantee, Staples will match the prices of all competitors with retail store and online presence (including Amazon.com) plus give shoppers 10% off the price difference, whether in store or online. Some exclusions do apply. See www.staples.com/pricematch for more information.
Shoppers can also find great values each week on weekly hot deals by visiting www.staples.com/weeklyad. Staples Rewards® members will earn Staples Rewards on everything in the store and take advantage of free shipping on www.staples.com.
We need to replenish our school supplies throughout the year, and it's great to know that Staples carries iconic school products, all from their Less List, such as folders, notebooks and index cards that are low priced all season long, making it easy for families to save throughout the year as well.
