It's officially autumn, so that makes it officially soup season in my book. We do still have a few more warm weather days to get through, then it's time for all the good comfort things that the season brings, like knitted throws, chunky sweaters, hot tea, and lots and lots of soup. As much as I love soup and make it frequently throughout the year, I have never in my 45 years made split pea soup. I don't know why either, because peas have always been a favorite veggie of mine, and I'd eat them every night for dinner if my family wouldn't complain about the repetition. I usually have to find creative ways to sneak them into our dinners, like tucking them into fettuccine, shepherd's pie, steamed as a side dish, and so on. We had a few chilly, rainy days last week, so I hopped over to my favorite
recipe resource, Golden Blossom Honey, to look for a few new soup ideas
to test out and finally decided to give their Split Pea Soup recipe a try.
If you're a big fan of soups that are jam packed with lots of different veggies, then this Split Pea Soup is going to shoot straight to the top of your favorites. Obviously the peas are the main draw here, but potatoes, onions, celery, and carrots added in give so much bulk and flavor variety to this recipe, it could also be called vegetable soup for those days that I want to sneak more peas by my family without them getting suspicious that we're "eating peas for dinner again? ugh!" Sometimes you gotta be sneaky like that. And I don't even feel an ounce of guilt since there are so many nutrients in this soup, that knocks the guilt away from my word play deception. Served with a side of crusty rolls, this is the ultimate chilly weather comfort food if there ever was one.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup fresh carrots, diced
2 cups russet potatoes, peeled and diced

1 stalk celery, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
6 cups vegetable or chicken broth
2 tablespoons GOLDEN BLOSSOM HONEY

Is it still hot in your area, or have the autumn temperatures started to move in?

They are such a convenient and practical veggie even in their dry shape.
ReplyDeleteI think we should hit winter temps of below 10C next week, but there will warm days above 20C.
The really are. We use them in so many dishes.
DeleteAre you happy the cold temps have moved in? Allison is thrilled. She's been over the summer heat since June LOL
This sounds like a lovely hearty vegetarian soup (if made with veg broth). I've never added honey to soup-sounds very interesting. Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteVeg broth definitely and if you have any vegeta, it adds an extra kick to the broth too!
DeleteI love split pea soup and I make it for myself every once in a while because my daughter hates the stuff.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad she doesn't like it, but nice that you can make a little for yourself here and there!
DeleteGracias por la receta. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI also enjoy comfort food on colder days, and soup is always welcome! I love peas, and I love Portuguese pea soup, but this recipe you've shared is quite different from ours. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend!
I'll have to look up Portuguese pea soup. Sounds interesting!
DeleteI thought I already left a comment but here goes again. I love carrots, celery, and potatoes in split pea soup. This is an interesting twist with sweet potatoes and honey giving it a sweeter taste. I'll have to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteYou did, sorry. I get behind on approving comments lately. Need to get me an assistant LOL
DeleteIt's starting to cool down a little bit but it doesn't truly get cold until right around Halloween or a little bit after 🎃
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous that your cold weather stays away until after Halloween. It's always hit or miss on if we need winter coats for trick or treating.
DeleteI'm sure by now they just suspect peas to be there. Be more suspicious if they weren't haha
ReplyDeleteHot during day here. Cool rest of it.
They know better than to say anything about their suspicions though LOL
DeleteI love split pea soup but have never made it because I’d be eating it by myself. I’ve actually never made a bean soup with dried beans. It seems like a hassle? We are still having nice, warm weather 😃
ReplyDeleteGirl, get you a pressure cooker and it takes the hassle away from dry bean cooking. I never made them before I bought a pressure cooker, now I make them several times a week.
DeleteI had split pea soup for lunch today. I love it!
